ALEKSANDR

Walking through the park, I ignored the pointed stares of the people I passed. It wasn't entirely uncommon for me to stop by the park where Inga and Tatyana went to play. I enjoyed the glee on my girl's face as she got acquainted with the dirt in a way that proved she wasn't entirely her mother's daughter. She had just a bit of my love for the outdoors inside her, unlike the woman who could barely stomach having the fresh air touch her skin long enough to walk from the car to the doors of the Manor.

But when I came, it was usually when I was merely taking a break from my workday, from the endless assault of phone calls and fires that needed putting out and addressing issues among the groups of my men who performed different tasks for me throughout the city. I wore my suit, sticking out like a sore thumb in the groups of nannies and parents who came to the park on their day off. Today, I'd taken to watching Harlowe and Tatyana play on the security cameras and never even dealt with all the bullshit that called my name.

I'd been doubtful that my vivacious, mischievous daughter could behave under such guidance.

But she seemed to flourish, conversing with Harlowe intently, and their conversations when Tatyana could make her own choices from a set of options that Harlowe provided bolstered her confidence.

It had been less than twenty-four hours, so the transitions weren't always smooth and sometimes Harlowe had to show patience while she waited for Tatyana to decide or do the right thing for the right reasons, without merely conforming to authority but actually understanding the motivations behind them.

Tatyana barreled down the tallest slide at the playground, propelling herself forward with her hands on the sides until she reached the bottom of the curve. She took off at a run the moment her feet touched the ground, giggling as she flew across the wood chips. Harlowe followed her down the slide, her lithe body squeezing into the child-sized structure without issue.

When she hit the bottom, she chased after Tatyana with single-minded determination. The way she moved hinted at a history of running, as if she'd done track in high school. The way her arms
